Power is the new constraint for AI compute
Why grid access, not silicon, increasingly decides where and how fast AI capacity can be deployed.

The shift
For most of the last decade, data center planning started with space and network. For AI-scale facilities, planning now starts with power. High-density GPU clusters concentrate electrical and thermal load in ways that conventional designs were never sized for.
What changes in the design
- Grid interconnection becomes the critical path. Substation capacity, utility timelines and redundancy topology determine schedule more than building shell.
- Electrical architecture moves upstream. Medium-voltage distribution, UPS strategy and generation must be defined before white space layout.
- Cooling follows power. Rack densities that justify liquid cooling also change electrical room sizing and resilience planning.
Integration as risk control
When power, cooling, network and controls are designed by separate parties, interfaces become the main source of delay. A single integration layer that owns those interfaces reduces rework during commissioning and gives operators one accountable counterpart.
Practical questions for owners
- What is the confirmed power envelope, and on what timeline?
- Which redundancy level does the workload actually require?
- Who owns the interfaces between electrical, mechanical and IT systems?
Answering these early is usually worth more than any single equipment choice.
